Three-day strike by grounds staff

Lufthansa ground staff will begin a three-day strike from tomorrow (28.02.2024) to Friday, as announced by the Verdi union.

Workers at the group's subsidiaries Lufthansa Technik, Lufthansa Aviation Training and Lufthansa Technical Training are also expected to take part in the strike.

A fresh strike was called after the employer did not submit an improved wage proposal in consultation with the union. Lufthansa management said on Sunday it wanted an agreement reached soon to avoid another strike. For its part, the Verdi union asked for an improved offer before returning to the bargaining table.

In its statement, Ver.di says the mobilization will not affect passenger flights this time. In contrast, the last two strikes by Lufthansa ground staff have canceled hundreds of passenger and cargo flights to and from seven major German airports. Ver.D. It also notes that the company has improved its offer “slightly” and “only in two areas” in ongoing negotiations with Lufthansa. On the other hand, the airline's head of human resources, Michael Niekermann, says that Lufthansa has taken a “big step towards Ver.di” and offered a “new and improved” offer.

Ver.di is demanding a 1.25% wage increase for its roughly 25,000 workers and an “inflation bonus” of at least 500 euros and 3,000 euros in the current year. The next round of talks is scheduled to take place on March 13 and 14.

Strike action is also underway in the local public transport sector (metro, buses, trams) this week. MMM-free intervals vary by state. Significantly, in Berlin they already went on strike on Monday, while on March 1 they will repeat their mobilizations on Thursday and Friday, together with the “Friday for the Future” organization, which is organizing rallies across the country.
